so - our first bout thing is barely a month away - March 2nd to be exact - and there's still so much to do before it and every day is a learning experience - earlier this week, I was charged with writing my very first press release* - the release was sent out and we've gotten a couple of responses from local media, but the one response that floored me was when the sports director of one of the local news stations called - the sports director - like we had grown from fluff on the morning show (between the singing Chihuahua and a new omelette pan) into an actual sport - and that was cool.

Our training has really stepped up because, as an actual sport, we really need to be able to kick some ass - but I strained or sprained or pinched something in my back recently, so I can barely walk, let alone skate - this morning, I finally broke down and went to the doctor (which is big, because I need to be projectile bleeding from my eyes before I'll consider calling the doctor) - as usual, the doctor spent most of our time together talking about the derby, asking about our training schedule and the history of derby and the feminist movement that is derby (all of which he pronounced "so cute"... way to miss the point, dude) - so I do my time in the office and walk out with a couple prescriptions.

When I get home, after downing a couple of the muscle-relaxer-type things, I happen to glance at the literature that I've been given by the pharmacist - possible side effects: dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness... yadda yadda yadda, whatever, if it makes my back feel better, I'm cool with all of that. Then I see one line at the end, thrown in as an afterthought: "This medication may cause your urine to turn green-black in color." Um... wha?

Wow, am I really ending the post with that? Seriously?

* for once, I was happy to be living in a small town, because instead of trying to swim through layers of crap on the interweb, I was able to sponge info from my new pal, the editor of one of the coolest magazines evah.

and another small town benefit is my lunch date on Tuesday with my new blog pal.
