I saw "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" today - and, almost in spite of myself, I really, really liked it. Not more than the original, and not less (like Trish says) but I really, really liked it. *It's sort of like "Ocean's 11" - I adored the original (because I adore the Rat Pack, especially Frank) and I adored the new one (Hello, George Cloooney? Brad Pitt? Yeah, totally). It's not as though one movie was superior to another, they both stand alone as eternally watchable movies.
I don't believe that "Willy Wonka" needed to be remade** because even today, the original is valid, but the new one... I loved it, I really did. I'd even see it again and I'll definitely own it on DVD.***
And once again, Johnny Depp proves himself to be amazing (even with weird hair and giant Hillary Duff teeth), can he do any wrong? Can he? Is it possible? I don't think so. How has he managed to avoid making crappy movies like so many of his peers?****
*In spite of the conspicuous lack of snozzberries
** I know, I know, supposedly it isn't a remake, it's it's own movie, an adaptation of the book... yadda, yadda, yadda, but what-thefuck-ever, it's a remake, okay?
*** It should be noted that I own the original on VHS and DVD, but that doesn't surprise you, does it?
**** Jon Cusack, Matt Damon, are you listening?
