Southern Phrases, volume I
For anyone moving to the South, traveling through the South, conducting business with Southerners, or eating Southern Food - here are a couple helpful phrases:Southern Phrase: might could - ie: "I might could help you with that"
Translation: could

Southern Phrase: take up for - ie: "Why don't you take up for me when yo' Momma complains?"
Translation: stand up for, stick up for

Southern Phrase: laid out - ie: "He didn't come to work today, he got paid last night and is too laid up"
Translation: hung over

Southern Phrase: Mawmaw/Daydee - ie: "I'm drivin' up to see Mawmaw and Daydee this weekend"
Translation: Mother/Father

Southern Phrase: Do what now? - ie: Q: "How was your weekend?" A: "Do what now?"
Translation: Pardon me, what was that?
