What is that SMELL????
You know how everyone's house has a smell? Not bad, just everyone's house has a smell. And you can't smell your own house's smell, but sometimes if you're gone for some period of time and you walk inside, you can kind of get a hint of it.So after leaving at 6AM on Friday and being gone until about 3 today, we walk into the house and smell... a smell... it was a smell not unlike that of a pet store....
"Is that what our house smells like?" I ask.
"It smells... musty," my husband says.
"It smells like where hamsters go to die. Is that really what our house smells like?" I ask, frantically opening windows and looking for the Febreze. "Are we used to this smell?"
We open as many windows as possible and unpack and get something to eat and I go to take a nap (because, for some reason, driving a car for several hours is about as exhausting as running a marathon) and as I'm drifting off to sleep, I hear my son and husband stage whispering about "Oh, that's what the smell is."
I didn't bother getting up to investigate because times I'm able to curl up for a nap are few and far between, but when I woke up, the pet shop smell was gone.
A couple of hours later, I happened to think about it and asked and was told that Thursday night, before we left, my husband fed the snakes - one of the snakes, mine of course, is a picky eater and decided not to eat, so there was a frozen and defrosted mouse that was left in one of the feeding containers... FROM THURSDAY.
The good news is that my house doesn't naturally have a decaying hamster butt smell.
The bad news is that whenever I go away for a weekend (especially when there is no internet, no cable television and no mobile phone reception) I feel off for a couple of days until I can get back to normal*
*I meant normal for me, mmmkay?
