laughing out loud (but crying on the inside)

i *hate* LOL - it's about as insincere as "take care" - it's something you IM when you can't think of anything else to say and it's something you email when you are trying to point out how funny you are - just stop - please.

seriously, the LOL thing was getting to me on such a level that i thought i was going to have to abandon the internet altogether and move to pennsylvania to become amish - fortunately, i have been saved from a life of quilting and churning butter by my new knight in shining armor, martin - here is his eloquent and succinct explanation of the Humor Rating System, please read, comply, and pass along (because you know that LOL gets to you, too)

for your convenience, below is the new system:

L0 = Not funny at all.
L1 = I smiled - traditional smiley; :-).
L2 = I chuckled.
L3 = I laughed out loud - traditional 'lol'.
L4 = I laughed pretty hard for more than just a few moments - traditional 'rotfl' ('rolling on the floor laughing' - for the uninitiated).
L5 = No more, please, I can't stop the tears and I'm choking on my ckicken - (sightings include beverage (of choice) spewing from nose).

And for further nuance:
+/- = Suffix: Indicates any degree of humor between those established above. Hence, a loud chuckle that did not reach full laughter status would rate an L2+. Situations invoking L5+ are considered dangerous and are to be avoided. Dreadful humour that commands an L0- generally results in a fist-fight. As it should.

thank you, in advance, for your observance of these new rules - it may be a little hard to adjust at first, but i believe that once we get everyone online on board, the internet will be a much more pleasurable place for all of us (mostly because there will still be all that free porn)

  • I can almost smell the oncoming revolution ..

    .. whoops, no. That was my dog.

    Thanks for forwarding my system. We'll see where it goes from here.

    Cheers

  • I'm so glad you've done this as I have been implementing the L system in my comments however it is somewhat curious when no one knows what the hell I am talking about (other than you, Martin and the two other readers of his blog) ; )

    I actually started cringing when I would see LOL. It wasn't pleasant. Thank goodness for Super Martin!

  • A former e-friend of mine and I used LOL as a catch-all for a funny that made us smile, chuckle or laugh inside. For real laughs, we used AGL = Actual Genuine Laughter. We used that a lot.

  • well said, don - i vow to try to cut acronyms from my vernacular... unless, of course, someone uses LOL on me - then i reserve the right to use a well placed STFU
